There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over a craft table when no one uses it for a while.
I know that quiet well. I’ve been living with it.
I’m Serena — the face, the hands, and the slightly too-large collection of ribbon behind That MidLife Crafter. And after a break that was longer than I planned, I’m back at the table. Literally and figuratively.
I want to tell you why I left, what I found while I was away, and what I’m bringing back with me. Because if you’ve ever stepped away from something that brought you joy — and wondered if you’d lost it for good — this one’s for you.
Why I Stepped Away
Life, in short. The kind of life that doesn’t ask your permission before it rearranges everything. The kind where creative hobbies are the first thing to go and the last thing to come back.
I don’t say this for sympathy. I say it because I know I’m not alone. Many of the women in this community have told me the same thing — that creativity is the first casualty when life gets heavy. We tell ourselves it’s a luxury. We tell ourselves we’ll get back to it when things settle down.
Things rarely settle down.
What the Break Taught Me
Stepping away from crafting didn’t make me miss the projects. It made me miss the feeling.
The particular satisfaction of having something in my hands. Of a beginning, a middle, and an end. Of making a deliberate choice — this colour, this stitch, this fold — in a world that often doesn’t give us many deliberate choices.
Creativity, I’ve come to believe, isn’t a hobby. It’s a way of staying present in your own life.
Here’s my introduction (re-introduction) video that you can watch (it’s short!)
What’s Coming Next
I’m back — and I have a clear sense of where we’re going.
More tutorials at a pace that respects your time and your hands. More honest conversation about what it means to be creative in midlife. More community, more connection, and more of the slow, satisfying projects that remind you what your hands are capable of.
If you’re new here: welcome. Pull up a chair.
If you’ve been here before: I’m glad we found each other again.
Imperfect progress is the only rule.
